In September 2014, pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong protested outside the government headquarters and occupied several major throughfares to protest against the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress' decision on proposed electoral reform which ruled out genuine democracy for the forthcoming 2017 Hong Kong Chief Executive election. The protest is named "The Umbrella Revolution" by The Independent on September 29. The term "umbrella revolution" was previously coined on Twitter by user @Aureliano_no_24 on September 26.
